The LAS-1505 GPS Tracking Key from LandAirSea is designed to affix to a vehicle to help track the routes that vehicle has travelled. LandAirSea markets Tracking Key as a way to keep track of teenage drivers, company vehicles, and spouses.

It’s important to note that this is not a vehicle location device: you cannot go on your computer and find out where the vehicle is located at that moment. Rather, the Tracking Key records a vehicle’s path while it is in motion. Then, you remove the device from the car, plug it into a computer, and download the data from the device into your computer.

LandAirSea says that their products receive signals from 24 different GPS satellites operated by the Department of Defense, and that the device reports accuracy within 2.5 meters of the vehicle’s location. Users say it’s a little less precise, but is usually within 3 or 4 houses of the recorded street address.

The data recorded by the LandAirSea Las-1505 Tracking Key includes the course a vehicle took, how long it took to get there, how fast the vehicle travelled, and the length and location of any stops along the way. Stops lasting shorter than 7 minutes sometimes are not logged in the report as a full stop, but the software’s route playback feature does allow users to identify shorter stops that occurred.

Users complain of outdated and somewhat “clunky” software, but the data is automatically imported into Google Earth, which most find to be perfect for their needs. NOTE: This product does not work with Mac and Linux operating systems, only Windows.

One of the common praises of the LandAirSea LAS-1505 GPS Tracking Key is the strength of its signal. Owners have placed it behind metal and under upholstery and find the signal to be strong and consistent no matter where they put the device.

The Zoombak ZMBK200 Advanced GPS Car and Family Locator is a small GPS unit that can be accessed remotely to gain information on where the unit is at any given time. It uses a combination of GPS signals (which identify the unit’s location) and cell phone signals (which communicate that location to the Zoombak interface). Users can log on to the Zoombak website and check a car’s real-time location, and can also request text and/or email notifications any time the unit enters or leaves a pre-set “active safety zone” (e.g. home, work, school, grandma’s house, etc.).

The Zoombak ZMBK200 comes with a wall charger, car charger, and carrying case. It easily fits in pockets and backpacks, measuring under 3 inches and weighing 2.5 ounces.

Generally, the ZMBK200 runs in stand-by mode, then kicks on to check and report the unit’s location every 15 minutes. Because of this, notification texts/emails for safety zone entrance/exit can be delayed by as long as 15 minutes. On the website, “Find Now” requests are real-time, and Continuous Tracking mode can be enabled and will run for an hour. This will use up more battery power than the regular 15 minute interval, however. Users can also request to be notified via text and/or email when the battery in the unit is low.

In addition to the product itself, users must pay an activation fee and subscribe to an ongoing service plan. As of 10/4/10, monthly plans range from $34.99/month for as-you-go to $239.99 ($9.99/month) for a pre-paid 2-year plan. The lifetime plan costs $349.99. Cancelling before 1 year warrants a $100 cancellation fee.

Zoombak ZMBK200 is promoted as a tool that provides peace of mind, and for the most part, customers seem pleased with the experience. More than half report excellent performance, but some seem to have trouble getting the unit to recognize nearby GPS receptors.

Poor customer service is a consistent complaint among those who have had trouble with either the unit itself or with billing. Inconsistencies, ill-informed customer service representatives, and gross delays in necessary refunds have all been reported. However, people who return the unit to external retailers, such as Amazon, have no problem getting refunded for the unit itself; it’s service plan disputes and Zoombak’s representatives that are earning a poor reputation.

Bottom line: The Zoombak ZMBK200 is a small GPS locator with a powerful signal. It offers real-time “Find Now” location and updates (via text and/or email) when the unit enters or leaves specific preset zones. Most users are very pleased with the performance of the product itself, but Zoombak is fast earning a reputation for very poor customer service, support, and billing resolution.

The Entourage offers two primary types of location alerts. Users can sign up for mobile security alerts via text and email, which will send an alert any time the vehicle departs from a pre-described geographic location. Escort promotes this feature as a security measure to be alerted instantly of possible theft.

The second type of location service is the request of real-time locating, which can be activated via text and web and reports the vehicle’s location within 20 seconds of the request being sent. This services is particularly robust, as it offers interactive mapping that integrates with Google Maps. Users can zoom, pan, and view exact street location, direction, and vehicle speed.

Battery life in the Escort Entourage PS is fairly good. Its internal, rechargeable battery can run for several days before needing a recharge. (Escort says 7 days and users say 3-4 days; it depends largely on how often the unit is activated for real-time location reporting). The Kit-0019 set comes with both a vehicle charger cable and a wall charger.

In addition to the location-based alerts and updates, the Escort Entourage PS Vehicle Tracker offers two additional alter types. Users can choose to receive text and/or email updates when the unit battery begins to get low. Security alerts are also available: the Escort Entourage PS is equipped with tamper-sensing technology that senses abnormal vibration, which can be associated with an ongoing attempt at vehicular theft.

The Escort Entourage PS unit itself is more expensive than competing units from other companies (the Zoombak ZMBK200, for example), but its monthly data plans are more affordable and straightforward. The GoTrack EZ updates location a minimum of once per minute, which is more often than many competitors (several update every 15 minutes unless instructed to do otherwise).

The company promotes this is a device helpful in monitoring the route and behavior of a driver and of tracking travel patterns on vacations or other extended trips.

Note: The purpose of the TrackStick Pro is not to identify the real-time location of a vehicle. It does not provide remote information that can be viewed online or via cell phone. Rather, the purpose of data recording GPS trackers is to log and document a specific route that a vehicle has taken after the fact.

The TrackStick Pro features a built in USB jack; the unit is plugged directly into a computer for the data to be downloaded. This is also helps charge the unit, which gains power from the computer while plugged in and can be charged with a cigarette lighter plug.

Because there is no real-time communication service, there are no monthly fees or activation costs associated with the TrackStick Pro, but it does mean that to read the report, the device must be physically removed, brought to the computer, and then re-placed on the vehicle. NOTE: the software required to do this is only compatible with Windows operating systems.

Data recorded by the TrackStick Pro is relatively comprehensive. It delivers information on exact route, speed, and other elements. When downloaded onto the computer, the data can be directly integrated with Google Earth for street-level overlay. TrackStick says the data is also compatible with other mapping programs.

TrackStick emphasizes the compact size and overall durability of the TrackStick Pro, touting its weatherproof case and ability to operate in both very cold (-22 degrees F) and very hot (176 degrees F) temperatures.

There is not much in the way of customer feedback with regards to the TrackStick Pro, so the reliability of this product, and the company’s customer service department is not established. Some reviews report very negative customer service experiences, and users have expressed skepticism over a series of glowing Amazon reviews, all placed on the same day, of multiple TrackStick products.

Bottom line: The TrackStick Pro GPS Vehicle Tracking Data Logger purports severable desirable characteristics, but the jury is still out as to whether positive online reviews are accurate portrayals of the product’s performance. LandAirSea LAS-1505 Tracking Key Vehicle GPS Tracking System

I have not yet used the software because it would not load on my Mac, and the DVD drive on my PC is broken. Still waiting for the new drive to arrive before I can try it. I contacted Landairsea tech support to see if there was a way to use the software on the Mac (live chat) but gave up after waiting 20 minutes for a response. There was nothing about use on a Mac on the website so I am assuming it just isn’t compatible.

Field trial of the unit seems like it gets good signal anywhere in the car. It’s mostly plastic (the car that is)

I wouldn’t have much trouble with the small screws holding the battery cover except they are right next to the magnet which is quite strong. The screws and screwdriver keep snapping over to the magnet. Wish I had a plastic screwdriver. They should provide non-magnetic screws.

I bought this to keep tabs on my cheatin’ spouse. It is excellent when it works….the only problem is that the coverage is based on the AT&T coverage map and it stinks in my area. When paying 14.95 a month you would think coverage would be better than what it is…..Just check your local AT&T coverage to see how it will work for you.

Battery power is better than I expected…it lasts me about 3 to 4 days depending on how much I locate it or have it scheduled to locate every 10 to 30 minutes. Its larger than I thought it would be so hiding it was a little more difficult but I found a good hiding spot…

It will text or email you when battery is low or car is moved (if it’s in good coverage area) Also when the car is moved it will locate the device every 5 minutes for two hours which I liked.

So, all in all, if the coverage in my area was better and it was a bit smaller, it would be perfect!

This product is very easy to install with only two wires. One for power(must find a constant 12v) and one for ground. After that you just choose a location to hide the device and press the on button. Then you log onto the website and choose a plan, either yearly or monthly. I choose yearly $179/yr because they waive the activation fee.

The product itself has many great features such as text and email alerts, vehicle locating, and vehicle tracking. The actual gps locations are usually very accurate but they are sometimes off. For example: I press locate when i know my vehicle is parked in front of my house but when it gives me my location it says my vehicle is next door at the neighbors house. I would give this product 5 out of 5 if it didn’t have such an UNRELIABLE NETWORK. I set my device to text me if the motion sensor senses vibration, if my vehicle is stolen, or if it logs out of the network. I have received a text multiple times in the past month saying my device has logged off the network which basically means the device is off. There is no way of locating or tracking it until the network is back up. Sometimes its offline for 5-10 minutes, sometimes i’ve noticed it down for hours. I have since emailed customer service and this is what they are saying:

“We are currently having intermittent issues with devices being able to communicate over our wireless partners wireless network. We are working to resolve the situation as soon as possible.”

This would be a good explanation if it happened maybe once or twice since owning the device, but it has happened at least 8 or 9 times and i have the texts alerts to prove it. This is very unreliable because at any of these times your vehicle could be stolen and you would have no way to track it until they fix whatever issues they are having for the day.

I also bought this product because at CES 2010 they announced an iphone app coming in January, currently there is only an app for blackberrys. It is now February and no iphone app available which is very disappointing.

For this review i gave only 2 stars mainly for the ease of installation and great features. I wouldn’t give it more than 2 stars because I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this product to friends or family members knowing that there are ongoing issues with the network. I use it to compare daily time sheets from the men and it really has cut down on my payroll. As you know, by law an employer needs to pay one way to the job. However, we do not need to pay everyone, only the driver, for the ride home. You can see where I’m going with this. My crew cab holds 6 men. (Example: trip to Boston. Going to job in morning is 1.5 hrs in normal traffic. Travel home 1.5-2 hrs. 1.5 x $37.00= $56.25 x 5= $281.25. Amount in 1 week = $1406.25. The clock stops ticking when the truck starts moving, and only the driver gets paid. Also, because they know that they are being tracked, it stops them from making the coffee stops on the way to the job. The old “traffic was heavy” excuse is no longer valid. Another point is misuse of the vehicles after hours and on weekends for the trips to the store which saves on gas, but, and this is really huge, it decreases (no, eliminates completely) the odds of an accident happening, increasing insurance costs, and possible loss of a valued employee. So, thanks for this early Xmas gift from your Company to mine.
